Sudan, September 2022: The price of electricity is 0.009 U.S. Dollar per kWh for households and 0.045 U.S. Dollar for businesses which includes all components of the electricity bill such as the cost of power, distribution and taxes.
South Sudan has one of the lowest electrification rates in the world; only 8% of its population had access to electricity in 2021, according to the latest estimates from the World Bank. Those connected to the power network experience frequent blackouts or forced load shedding, which makes standby generators necessary to meet electricity needs.18
Although power generation has continued to grow in the post-independence era, only about 62% of Sudan's population had access to electricity in 2021, according to the latest estimates from the World Bank. However, urban populations have substantially more access (84%) than rural populations (49%).
Sudan has significant wind and solar energy resources that are largely untapped. According to a World Bank study, Sudan has significant wind power potential along its coast on the Red Sea and in the Northern State. Sudan also has solar power potential, but renewable power tends to be small in scale and used for off-grid solutions.16
The cost of electricity in Somalia is high. According to Al Jazeera, a kilowatt of electricity in Mogadishu can cost up to $1 per hour, which is five times more expensive than in Kenya, and 10 times more expensive than in the U.S.
Electricity is a luxury in Somalia because most of the country's working population is jobless. According to the U.N., more than half of the country's population (those between the ages of 15 and 64) is unemployed, with a youth unemployment rate of 67 percent. Additionally, 40 percent of Somalia's population lives below the poverty line.
For example, Benadir Energy Company (BECO)—Somalia's largest electric utility and the only provider in Mogadishu—developed a 10MW solar farm outside Mogadishu and connected to its power generation and transmission.
However, because a country's ability to generate electricity is heavily influenced by factors that include the country's geographical location, geological makeup, level of development and technological advancement, and whether it is high-, middle-, or low-income, the price of electricity can vary widely from one country to the next.
The Niue Strategic Energy Road Map (NiSERM) 2015-2025 outlines Niue's aspiration to meet 80% of its electricity needs from renewable energy sources by 2025, which would in turn reduce the country's high reliance on imported fossil fuel.

The project will be completed mid-2026 when the Government of Niue under the Department of Utilities and Niue Power Corporation (NPC) will take over the ownership. We anticipate savings of 816,000 litres of fuel and 2,202 tCO2e in year one. It will support Niue to deliver on our climate goals and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
However Niue is 96% dependent on imported fuel for power generation and 100% dependent on imported fuel for land, sea and air transportation. Reliable, affordable, secure and sustainable energy supply is key to achieving prosperity for all Niueans.
